Description

My first big break in comics came right around the turn of the century/millennium, working on the DC Comics series Batman: Gotham Adventures, which was based on the animated TV show The New Batman Adventures. It was a dream come true for me, it jumpstarted my comics career, and I got to work with some amazing people, including the wonderfully talented Scott Peterson, who took over writing B:GA at the same time I began drawing it.

Scott often wrote wordless scenes for me to draw, which I realize sounds somewhat contradictory -- the scenes may not have had dialogue, but he would write shot descriptions that would give me a sort of play-by-play of what he wanted me to draw. Sometimes he'd provide a detailed breakdown of the action, and other times he'd just give me a vague sense of the scene and would let me figure out how to approach it on my own. I really enjoy working on these types of sequences, making sure the action flows visually from panel to panel in a way that makes sense to the reader without the help of any dialogue. That's actually how I look at all my pages, whether they have words or not -- I try to tell the story visually as best I can, so that the reader would be able to tell what's happening even if all the word balloons and captions were removed. That's not always easy to do, especially in "talking heads" conversation scenes, but I feel it's something all comic book artists should shoot for :)

Batman: Gotham Adventures #45 was written by Scott Peterson, pencilled by me, inked by Terry Beatty, lettered by Albert T. de Guzman, coloured by Lee Loughridge, and published by DC Comics. If you'd like to read more, you can find the rest of the comic on Comixology.
